Living together, working together, Growing together | Esk Valley Camphill Community, North Yorkshire Moors

Esk Valley Camphill Community consists of a group of about eighty adults, many of whom have a learning disability. They have launched a new Camphill venture in The North Yorkshire Moors. All are residents or former residents of Botton Village Camphill Community – both co-workers and residents with a disability. There are also several children living as part of the families and households in the community.

The community is centred around ten large and five small houses in three villages – Danby, Castleton and Botton – a local shop that is owned and run by community members, a community garden and a Steiner School. A number of co-workers have been approved as Shared Lives carers and provide registered services under the management of the Avalon Group. The Shared Lives framework allows the community members to pursue the principles by which they have lived, worked and built community together. As members of the community, they live together, work together and grow together. They are delighted to have been confirmed as an affiliate member of the Association of Camphill Communities for the coming year and are working towards full membership.

The community has made the transition from one care provider, CVT, under a Supported Living regulatory framework, to another, the Avalon Group, under a Shared Lives regulatory framework.
