The Camphill Foundation UK & Ireland is delighted to have supported Camphill Community Mourne Grange with a grant of £10,000 towards the purchase of new shepherd’s hut accommodation for co-workers and short-term volunteers.
Situated within 100 acres of beautiful countryside on the outskirts of Kilkeel in Northern Ireland, Camphill Community Mourne Grange is a vibrant, life-sharing community where adults with learning disabilities and other support needs live, work and thrive together. Established in 1971, the community brings together villagers, dedicated co-workers and international volunteers in a supportive and therapeutic environment.
As Mourne Grange has welcomed increasing numbers of villagers and short-term co-workers wishing to experience life-sharing within the community, the need for additional accommodation has grown. The new shepherd’s huts will provide comfortable, self-contained living spaces, helping the community continue to welcome people who make an invaluable contribution to daily life.
Reflecting on the project, Floris Lange, House Co-ordinator at Camphill Mourne Grange said:
“As we responded to an increasing demand for villagers and short-term co-workers to join our life-sharing community, we needed to find additional accommodation. A visit to Camphill Loch Arthur in Scotland highlighted how successfully shepherd’s huts were being used to meet this need, and it inspired us to get the ball rolling with planning and fundraising here at Mourne Grange. The first shepherd’s hut, built in Northern Ireland, has now been delivered and furnished, ready for a co-worker to move in, and fundraising continues for a second hut.
